Training Journal 4.16.08

Phew. Today was a long day.

The morning workout went fairly smoothly, at least – weighted pull-ups, dips, and jump squats, plus wall squats, funky pull-ups, and a good amount of stretching, with 20, uh, duffel-bag swings per arm as a finisher. I added one rep to each lift, and I think next time I could stand to add a few more. Soon I’m going to have to worry about adding more weight, I suppose.

Evening practice, however, went kind of rough – I didn’t sleep very well last night, though my wonderful perfect girlfriend helped me get back to sleep a little bit better. Still, by the time 7pm kickboxing came around, I was significantly slower than I usually am, which proved to be especially bad timing because Hatsu’s classes are just warm-up, bag work/shadowboxing/focus mitts, and then sparring – no time for technique. So I expended what energy I had, and put a nice show pounding on one of the guys who just couldn’t deal with my reach for two rounds. By the time that was done, however, I was pretty done as well; while I survived the BJJ warmup, positional drills, takedown sparring, and then an hour-long sparring session all beat the shit out of me. Stick a fork in me – I’m done. Time to get a good night’s sleep – no alarm tonight, thank you.

Thought I’d pass along some neat linkage – one is a bit I found from the RossTraining blog about random hokey garbage sold as exercise equipment, and the other is a bit from John Berardi’s Precision Nutrition forums about “good food” and “bad food” that’s worth a read.

Gear – Killer Bee X Futura Laboratories T-Shirt

The last gear post about the Purebred shirt was just the beginning, I’m afraid.

I mentioned that I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the Purebred shirt in the used clothing racks at Komehyo. When I went this last weekend, though, that surprise turned into dread.

Dread, because instead of one neat MMA shirt, I saw three. Those bastards have found my weakness. Fortunately, one of them was hideous, so I didn’t get it. It was a toss-up between a neat GRABAKA t-shirt which was a little too tight on the arms and loose on the chest ($10) and this hot Killer Bee t-shirt that was $30. I guess that’s not too high a price to pay considering the new Killer Krazy Bee gear costs like, $80 for a shirt or something, but still, ouch.

It’s a heavier t-shirt than your average Hanes, and it definitely feels like a quality piece of work – no garage printer transfer operation here. Still, I’m going to make sure I wash this bad boy inside-out because I have a feeling it’d look like garbage if the logo started to fade or peel. Now I just need to find a sufficiently dope fitted cap or beanie to go with this.

Wish me luck for next time. If they’ve got some of the hoodies there, my wallet is fucked.
